IYABO OBASANJO PREDICTS LOW MATERNAL MORTALITY

Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, has predicted a reduction in maternal and child mortality in the next five years in the country.
Obasanjo-Bello, who spoke to newsmen after visiting a  Vestico Virginal Fistula (VVF) Centre in Birnin-Kebbi, advised state governments to make enough funds available for the health sector.
According to her, with adequate funding and provision of necessary equipment in the hospitals, the rate of maternal deaths will definitely reduce to the bare minimum.
The lawmaker, who was impressed by the way the Kebbi State government handled VVF cases and healthcare delivery, also said with adequate medical care by state governments, the rate of VVF patients will reduce.
“I must say we are impressed with what we have seen at this VVF centre and I must commend the state government for its commitment in addressing issues related to maternal mortality and child morbidity,” she said.
THISDAY gathered that  Obasanjo-Bello was impressed when she was informed at the VVF centre by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajia Habiba Ibrahim Umar, that about 703 patients had been successfully operated upon between 2000 to 2005.
During a courtesy call on the deputy governor, Senator Obasanjo Bello lauded the efforts of the state government towards eradicating VVF cases and called for advocacy by stakeholders  who she said should partner  the National Health Insurance Scheme and plan to enroll all civil servants in the scheme.
The deputy governor during the courtesy call told the visiting health committee chairman the achievements the state government had made in the area of health, education, agriculture, roads construction, water and electricity supplies, women and youths empowerment.He assured the committee of the state government commitment in the eradication of VVF and announced the state preparedness to benefit from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
